Start with the outcome you need, then compare the exact plan terms. None of these options is automatically best for every traveler. The provider’s current product page and terms control the plan. Do not rely on an old comparison chart or a country name alone.
The word “eSIM” can describe different products with different device, purchase, and activation rules.
A traveler can buy a prepaid data plan that covers mainland China from a worldwide provider. Compatibility, coverage, installation, activation, validity, and included services depend on the exact device and plan.
This is an eSIM profile issued by a China mainland carrier, not the same product as a worldwide-provider travel eSIM. For iPhone, Apple currently lists only China-mainland iPhone 17e model A3635 and iPhone Air model A3518, with carrier-store activation and an ID check.
Google and Samsung both state that eSIM availability can depend on the exact model, purchase region, and carrier. A general phone-family name is not enough to confirm support.
These checks matter more than a low headline price or an “unlimited” label.
Confirm eSIM support on the manufacturer’s official page and on the travel eSIM provider’s compatibility list. Do not rely only on the phone family name.
On iPhone, go to Settings → General → About → Carrier Lock. Apple says “No SIM restrictions” means the iPhone is unlocked. For Android, check the original carrier’s unlock policy.
The plan should explicitly name mainland China. Check the current partner-network, 4G or 5G description, geographic exclusions, and whether manual network selection is supported.
Check total or daily data, fair-use or throttling terms, what happens after the allowance is used, and whether tethering or hotspot use is allowed.
Follow the provider’s current instructions. Installing an eSIM, activating the plan, and starting the validity period may occur at different times.
Do not assume the plan includes a phone number or text messages. Confirm support channels, refund rules, and what you will use if the plan does not connect.
This matters when banks, payment apps, or other accounts may send verification texts to your usual number.
If you keep your home line active, first check your home carrier’s current China roaming and SMS charges. Do not assume that receiving an SMS abroad is always free.
Set the travel eSIM as the cellular-data line. If your home plan does not cover roaming data, turn off Data Roaming for that line. Apple says that keeping both lines active can still result in roaming fees from the home line.
Android menu names and dual-SIM behavior vary, so follow the phone manufacturer and carrier instructions.
Use this final scan before paying. Empty boxes mean the plan is not ready to become your first-day connection.
