China Internet Setup Guide

China eSIM Guide: What to Check Before You Buy

Compare travel eSIM, home-carrier roaming, and physical SIM options before you pay. The right choice depends on your exact phone, trip length, SMS needs, plan rules, and backup. Do not choose a plan on price alone.

Before You Buy

Check these four areas first

1

Phone

Confirm the exact model, purchase region, and carrier lock. Check the manufacturer and your home carrier.

2

Plan

Confirm mainland China coverage, data, speed, hotspot, validity, support, and refund terms.

3

SMS

Check whether the plan includes a number or text messages. Never assume that it does.

4

Fallback

Keep roaming, Wi-Fi, or a physical SIM option available. Save setup instructions offline.

QUICK ANSWER

There is no single best eSIM for every trip.

A travel eSIM is often convenient for a short trip, but only when your exact phone supports it, the phone is unlocked, and the plan explicitly covers mainland China.

Choose home-carrier roaming when keeping your usual number and minimizing setup matters more than price. Compare a physical or local carrier option for a longer stay or when you need a local number. Whichever route you choose, verify the activation trigger, validity start, data and speed policy, hotspot rules, SMS support, and a fallback before you pay. Do not buy until you know when the plan starts and whether it is data-only. Mobile data and app availability are separate questions. This guide covers the connection purchase decision; the blocked-app guide covers Google, WhatsApp, Gmail, and related access issues.

Short trip
A travel eSIM is often the simplest data option when the phone and plan are compatible.
Need home-number SMS
Check your home carrier’s China roaming and SMS rules before choosing a data-only plan.
Longer stay or local number
Compare physical or local carrier options instead of assuming a travel eSIM will meet every need.

Travel eSIM vs roaming vs physical SIM

Start with the outcome you need, then compare the exact plan terms. None of these options is automatically best for every traveler. The provider’s current product page and terms control the plan. Do not rely on an old comparison chart or a country name alone.

Option
Best for
Check before choosing
Travel eSIM
Short trips and mobile data ready before or soon after landing.
Exact device and region support, carrier unlock, mainland China coverage, data and speed policy, hotspot, activation, validity, SMS, support, and refund terms.
Home-carrier roaming
Keeping your usual number and using your existing carrier relationship.
China coverage, data and SMS charges, travel-pass rules, daily limits, fair-use terms, and how to prevent unintended roaming data.
Physical or local SIM
Longer stays or travelers who may need a local plan or number.
Phone unlock and band support, current purchase channel, ID requirements, plan language, data and SMS inclusions, and activation support.

Travel eSIM is not the same as a mainland-carrier eSIM

The word “eSIM” can describe different products with different device, purchase, and activation rules.

Tourist data option

Travel eSIM from a worldwide provider

A traveler can buy a prepaid data plan that covers mainland China from a worldwide provider. Compatibility, coverage, installation, activation, validity, and included services depend on the exact device and plan.

Verify the provider’s current China plan and compatibility list before paying.
Local carrier account

Mainland-carrier eSIM

This is an eSIM profile issued by a China mainland carrier, not the same product as a worldwide-provider travel eSIM. For iPhone, Apple currently lists only China-mainland iPhone 17e model A3635 and iPhone Air model A3518, with carrier-store activation and an ID check.

Do not apply these iPhone rules to every Android device or assume every visitor is eligible for every local plan.
Android check

No single Android rule

Google and Samsung both state that eSIM availability can depend on the exact model, purchase region, and carrier. A general phone-family name is not enough to confirm support.

Check the manufacturer, home carrier, and travel eSIM provider for your exact device.

Do these six checks before paying for a China eSIM

These checks matter more than a low headline price or an “unlimited” label.

DEVICE

Check the exact phone model and purchase region

Confirm eSIM support on the manufacturer’s official page and on the travel eSIM provider’s compatibility list. Do not rely only on the phone family name.

UNLOCK

Confirm the phone is carrier-unlocked

On iPhone, go to Settings → General → About → Carrier Lock. Apple says “No SIM restrictions” means the iPhone is unlocked. For Android, check the original carrier’s unlock policy.

COVERAGE

Confirm mainland China and network details

The plan should explicitly name mainland China. Check the current partner-network, 4G or 5G description, geographic exclusions, and whether manual network selection is supported.

DATA

Read the allowance, speed, and hotspot rules

Check total or daily data, fair-use or throttling terms, what happens after the allowance is used, and whether tethering or hotspot use is allowed.

TIMING

Separate installation, activation, and validity start

Follow the provider’s current instructions. Installing an eSIM, activating the plan, and starting the validity period may occur at different times.

SERVICES

Check number, SMS, support, refund, and fallback

Do not assume the plan includes a phone number or text messages. Confirm support channels, refund rules, and what you will use if the plan does not connect.

Keep your home line reachable without letting it become the data line

This matters when banks, payment apps, or other accounts may send verification texts to your usual number.

HOME LINE

Check charges before keeping it active

If you keep your home line active, first check your home carrier’s current China roaming and SMS charges. Do not assume that receiving an SMS abroad is always free.

DATA LINE

Use the travel eSIM for cellular data

Set the travel eSIM as the cellular-data line. If your home plan does not cover roaming data, turn off Data Roaming for that line. Apple says that keeping both lines active can still result in roaming fees from the home line.

ANDROID

Follow device-specific instructions

Android menu names and dual-SIM behavior vary, so follow the phone manufacturer and carrier instructions.

Common China eSIM questions

These answers cover the edge cases that most often change the purchase decision.

Can I use a travel eSIM on an iPhone bought outside China mainland?

In general, yes, if the iPhone supports eSIM, is carrier-unlocked, and the worldwide provider supports your exact device and mainland China plan. Apple’s restriction on installing a China mainland carrier eSIM profile on an overseas-purchased iPhone is a different rule from buying a worldwide-provider travel eSIM.

Should I install the eSIM before flying?

Follow the provider’s current instructions. Some providers allow installation before departure, but installation, activation, and the start of the validity period are not always the same event. Save the instructions and support details offline before you travel.

Will a travel eSIM include calls, SMS, or a Chinese phone number?

Do not assume it will. A plan may be data-only, while another plan may include a number, calls, or texts. Read the exact plan inclusions before purchase if verification codes or a reachable number matter to you.

Can I keep my home SIM active for verification codes?

A compatible dual-SIM phone may let you keep both lines active, but you must check your home carrier’s roaming and SMS charges. Use the travel eSIM as the data line and prevent the home line from using roaming data unless your home plan covers it.

Does “unlimited data” mean full speed for the whole trip?

Not necessarily. The provider may apply a daily high-speed allowance, fair-use policy, or reduced speed after a threshold. Read the exact plan terms, including hotspot rules, before paying; do not rely on the word “unlimited” by itself.
